When her violent husband is killed, Maria is prosecuted as an accomplice. With no resources and no legal knowledge, she meets a filmmaker who uses actor direction to help her build her defense.

Maria Se Défend is a documentary that follows the ten days leading up to a life-changing trial. Facing a potential sentence of 20 to 30 years in prison, Maria arrived with no preparation and a court-appointed lawyer. Djinn and Salomé stepped in to help her structure her voice and reclaim her narrative. The film captures, day by day, her transformation as she learns to tell her side of a tragic story—inside and outside the courtroom—until the final verdict: acquitted on all counts.
